In 2016 VEI had the challenge to improve the level of asset management in Naivasha, Kenya. The water company called NAIVAWASS had no yearly maintenance scheme, novice logbooks and was not logging the failures.
VEI started supporting NAIVAWASS and the first steps resulted in some Excel files which contained yearly (preventive) maintenance schedules, failure forms, collection info about assets and introducing work instructions / procedures. The appreciation of the Kenyan colleagues was big which gave a lot of energy! We also started dreaming about a software package (BOP). The second part (2017) started with a positive evaluation and we started working with the BOP-software. Organising training, help completing the database and taking care about the work instructions were the most important parts of the second part. Another challenge was establishing stable network connections between the production sites and the office. The operators needed this to connect their computer with the BOP-database.
During the third and forth visit, the BOP-package was running stable as so was the network between production sites and the office. An extra job was created because Asset Management needed more attention and the results of this were clearly visible during the end of the project. At the end, we created a maintenance plan for the future, organised a training “Basic Operator” and explained the urgency of a good failure registration. While typing this, I realise again how great it is to be part of this project. Hopefully I ever can come back to beautiful Kenya for another project.
